Design & Technology Overview

At Mereworth Community Primary, Design & Technology helps children develop practical skills, creativity, and confidence through designing and making purposeful products. Lessons encourage pupils to think about real-life needs, explore materials and tools safely, and learn how to test ideas and improve their work. We support children in asking questions, planning carefully, and working through challenges with resilience.

Our curriculum covers a broad range of design and technology experiences, including designing with a clear purpose, selecting appropriate materials, and understanding simple mechanisms, structures, and electrical components where appropriate. Children learn to follow safe procedures, measure accurately, and use equipment responsibly. They also develop key vocabulary to describe what they are doing and to explain their choices, helping them communicate their thinking clearly.

We believe Design & Technology is most effective when pupils can see the link between learning and the wider world. Through projects, demonstrations, and hands-on making, children gain a sense of achievement and pride in their finished products. Parents can support at home by encouraging children to talk about their ideas, practise safe tool and craft skills where suitable, and look for everyday examples of good design—such as packaging, buildings, and everyday technology.
