History Overview
History helps us understand how our community and our country have changed over time. At Mereworth Community Primary, we encourage children to explore the past in a way that is engaging, age-appropriate, and connected to everyday life. By learning about people, places, and events from different periods, children build strong historical knowledge and develop skills such as asking questions, using simple evidence, and explaining what they have learned.
In primary history lessons, pupils may study familiar local stories alongside wider topics from across the UK. This might include learning about significant historical figures, major changes in everyday life, and how communities have developed. Children are supported to make sense of timelines, recognise that sources can tell us different things, and understand that history is not just a list of facts, but a story built from careful investigation.
We know that parents play an important role in supporting learning at home. You can help by talking about family memories, visiting local heritage sites, or sharing books and documentaries that spark curiosity. If you would like, we can also suggest simple activities that match what your child is learning in class, helping them practise key vocabulary and strengthen their understanding of the past.
