Art Overview
At Mereworth Community Primary, we believe art is an essential part of children’s learning and wellbeing. Through carefully planned lessons, children explore colour, shape, texture and form, developing confidence as they observe, experiment and express their ideas. Art supports creativity while also strengthening key skills such as concentration, fine motor control and problem-solving.
Our art curriculum encourages children to learn about a wide range of artists and cultures, helping them to understand that there are many ways to create and interpret the world. Children work with different materials and techniques, from drawing and painting to collage and printing, and they are taught to take pride in their work. We also place value on discussion and reflection, so children can talk about their choices and learn from feedback.
Parents can support this learning at home by encouraging curiosity and giving children time to create without pressure to make “perfect” results. Simple activities such as sketching, using everyday materials for collage, or exploring colours and patterns during walks can make a real difference. We look forward to working together to nurture a positive attitude to art and to celebrate children’s progress across the year.
