Primary Science Overview

At Mereworth Community Primary, we believe science helps children make sense of the world around them. Through carefully planned lessons, children learn to ask questions, make predictions, and explore ideas using simple, practical investigations. We encourage curiosity and support pupils to build secure scientific knowledge step by step, in line with the expectations of the National Curriculum for England.

Our approach places a strong emphasis on scientific skills as well as scientific facts. Children learn how to observe closely, measure accurately, record findings, and explain what they have discovered. They also develop understanding of key topics such as plants, animals including humans, materials, forces, and Earth and space, using age-appropriate resources and real-life examples where possible.

We welcome parents to support learning at home by noticing science in everyday life—such as discussing how plants grow, talking about weather and seasons, or exploring changes in materials during cooking and cleaning. If you would like more information about what your child is learning, or suggestions for simple science activities, please speak to your child’s class teacher. Together, we can help children build confidence and a lifelong interest in science.

We follow the Kent Primary Science Scheme of work 2024, which has 28 units of study. Each unit of study has been assigned to a particular year group in line with guidance from the New National Curriculum 2024.
