Geography Overview
Geography helps children understand the world around them, from their local area to faraway places. At Mereworth Community Primary, we encourage children to explore simple maps, look closely at their surroundings, and learn how people live in different environments across the United Kingdom and beyond.In lessons, children develop key skills such as using maps and atlases, recognising features like rivers, coasts, mountains and towns, and learning new vocabulary to describe places clearly. They also practise asking questions, making observations, and sharing ideas about what they notice, helping them connect geography to everyday life.
We aim to make geography engaging and accessible for primary-aged children through age-appropriate activities, practical investigations and thoughtful discussion. Supporting your child at home can be as simple as looking at a map together, talking about weather and seasons, or noticing local landmarks on a walk, so that geography becomes a natural part of learning.
