House and Sports Captains
At Mereworth Community Primary School, all Year 6 pupils are encouraged to take on leadership and responsibility roles across the school. Children apply for positions such as House and Sports Captains by explaining why they would be strong candidates before pupils vote democratically for their representatives. Successful candidates act as positive role models, support whole-school events such as Sports Day and proudly lead tours during open days. Sports Captains also take on additional responsibilities throughout the year, including organising events such as the Mini Wimbledon tournaments in the summer, helping to coordinate visits from professional athletes and managing the ordering of new sports equipment using the funds raised from these events. In addition, they are responsible for setting out scooters and ezy riders for pupils to use during playtimes and lunchtimes. It is always wonderful to see the children beam with pride as they speak so enthusiastically about our school community. These opportunities help to develop teamwork, communication and leadership skills, while promoting the values of responsibility and active citizenship that are central to school life.
