Swimming
At Mereworth, we believe swimming is an essential life skill and an important part of every child's education. All pupils from Year R to Year 6 enjoy annual swimming lessons at Tonbridge School Swimming Pool, where they develop confidence, technique, stamina and water safety awareness.
Following the Swim England programme, children learn a range of swimming strokes, improve their endurance and have opportunities to develop lifesaving skills. To further enhance their understanding of water safety, pupils also take part in sessions with the RNLI.
Swimming Success 2025–2026
We are proud of our pupils' achievements in swimming:
- 59% of Year 3 pupils achieved a distance of 25 metres or more.
- 59% of Year 4 pupils achieved a distance of 25 metres or more.
- 100% of Year 6 pupils achieved distances between 50 and 1,000 metres, with several pupils also earning their Bronze Award.
Swimming is the only statutory sport within the National Curriculum Physical Education programme of study in England. By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils are expected to swim at least 25 metres confidently, use a range of strokes effectively and perform safe self-rescue.
Our pupils consistently exceed these national expectations, leaving Mereworth with the confidence, competence and knowledge needed to enjoy swimming safely throughout their lives.
