Curriculum Overview

Our Curriculum: Lasting Learning Experiences for Life

At our school, we believe education should inspire a love of learning, nurture strong character and create experiences that shape children’s lives. Our curriculum is ambitious, inclusive and thoughtfully designed to enable every child to flourish, whatever their starting point or individual circumstances.

Curriculum intent

Our aim is to provide a rich and meaningful education that develops the whole child and prepares pupils for life beyond primary school. We want children to build a secure foundation of knowledge, skills and understanding, while developing the curiosity to ask questions, the confidence to explore ideas and the determination to embrace challenge. Every child should feel valued, supported and empowered to achieve their potential.

Our school values of Teamwork, Honesty, Resilience, Perseverance and Respect underpin everything we do. We aim to develop young people who act with integrity, care for others, take responsibility for their actions and recognise the positive contribution they can make to their community and the wider world.

Curriculum implementation

Our curriculum is carefully planned and sequenced so that learning builds progressively from one year to the next. We identify the essential knowledge and concepts within each subject, revisiting and deepening these over time to help pupils develop secure understanding. By making connections within and across subjects, children learn to apply their knowledge in different contexts and approach unfamiliar challenges with increasing independence.

Teaching is designed to build on prior learning, address gaps in understanding and provide appropriate support and challenge. Through effective teaching, assessment and feedback, we help pupils recognise their progress, strengthen their understanding and develop the skills needed to succeed. We have high expectations for all and celebrate individual achievements, ensuring that every child has meaningful opportunities to participate, contribute and experience success.

We believe learning should be memorable, purposeful and connected to the world beyond the classroom. Workshops, educational visits, trips, visiting speakers, special events, concerts, performances and practical activities enrich our curriculum, giving children opportunities to investigate, create and apply their learning in authentic contexts.

Purposeful play is also an important part of children’s development and is planned into daily playtimes and lunchtimes. These opportunities allow children to follow their interests, make choices, negotiate, solve problems and build positive relationships. Through shared play, pupils develop imagination, communication and collaboration, while learning to manage challenges, take appropriate risks and persevere when things do not go to plan.

We are committed to broadening children’s horizons and helping them appreciate the diversity of the world around them. Through our curriculum, resources such as Lyfta, and carefully planned enrichment activities, pupils encounter different cultures, traditions, beliefs and ways of life. These experiences encourage them to question assumptions, consider alternative perspectives and develop empathy and respect for people whose experiences may differ from their own.

Spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is woven throughout school life. Children are encouraged to reflect on important questions, consider the consequences of their decisions and develop a strong sense of fairness and responsibility. They learn about their place within their family, school and local community, as well as their responsibilities as members of a wider, interconnected world.

Curriculum impact

The impact of our curriculum is reflected in pupils’ achievements, their attitudes to learning and the way they conduct themselves. Children develop secure subject knowledge, make meaningful connections and increasingly apply their understanding independently. They demonstrate perseverance when faced with difficulties, work constructively with others and approach new opportunities with enthusiasm.

Our sustained academic outcomes are an important measure of our curriculum’s effectiveness. Over an extended period, our pupils have consistently achieved results well above national expectations. These achievements reflect the strength of our curriculum, teaching and wider provision, alongside our commitment to ensuring that every child receives the education and support they need to succeed.

However, we recognise that educational success extends beyond academic results. We want pupils to develop a strong sense of self, an appreciation of others and the ability to make thoughtful, responsible choices. Our values are evident in the relationships children build, the responsibilities they undertake and the respect they show towards themselves, others and their environment.

Preparing children for the future

By the time our pupils leave us, we want them to be equipped with the knowledge, skills and character to embrace the opportunities and challenges ahead. They should be ready for the next stage of their education, confident in their abilities, open to new ideas and able to work positively with others.

Above all, we want every child to leave with happy memories of their time at our school, a strong sense of belonging and the belief that their actions can make a meaningful difference. Through an ambitious curriculum, enriching experiences and a community grounded in shared values, we aim to give children more than an excellent education: we aim to create ‘Lasting learning experiences for life.’
